The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) thanks singer-songwriter Kesha for sharing her powerful story of recovery and lending her voice to the cause! We know that Kesha’s words will inspire others to seek the help they deserve.

Although 30 million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lives, these potentially-deadly mental illnesses continue to be shrouded in secrecy and shame.

By bringing light to her own struggle and encouraging others to get screened, Kesha has served as a #NEDAwareness Week role model. In case you haven’t seen her PSA yet, you can watch it below:

Kesha stated: “I am so honored to be partnering with NEDA (the National Eating Disorders Association) to help reduce the stigma of talking about and treating eating disorders. Eating disorders are life-threatening illnesses that can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, sexuality, or ethnicity. I had an eating disorder that threatened my life, and I was very afraid to confront it. I got sicker and the whole world kept telling me how much better I looked, and that’s when I realized that I wanted to be a part of the solution. In my eyes there are many ways to help those with eating disorders, but I have decided to stand tall and confident in my ever changing imperfect body and decide that I am enough, just as I am, no matter what number is on a scale or on the back of my jeans. 30 million Americans will suffer at some point in their lives with this, eating disorders often live in the shadows and many will not get the help they deserve because they are afraid or ashamed. I am pleading with you to not feel ashamed or alone. Help is here waiting for you, all you have to do is take the first step of being honest with yourself and deciding you want the freedom of recovery! I want to help NEDA promote the idea that we should all be proud of who we are exactly how we are and if you need help or know someone who does, NEDA is here to help.
