Yoga for UNBECOMING And Finding HOME In Your Body

Date:
Monday, February 26, 2018
Time:
6-7pm
Location:
Vella Yoga, 871 10th st.
City:
Marion
State:
IA
Summary:

Our culture has a complicated relationship with food, excercise, body image and appearance.

30 million Americans struggle with a full blown ED and millions more will battle food and body image issues, without the knowledge and healing possibilities of a mind, body and spirit connection.
It can be very hard to look within and heal when we are at odds with ourself. When we feel a disconnect and an internal struggle with self love and compassion.

In this 60 minute gentle and loving yoga class, we will focus on all that we truly are. Not our issues, or our thoughts but WHO we are beneath it all. Creating healing space for awareness and love and letting go of what no longer serves us.
Unbecoming all that keeps us from healing, in order to become the person we are meant to be.

Through guided meditation, heart opening yoga poses, gentle yoga movements and comforting savasana, we will find gratitude for our bodies and connect our mind, body and spirit into a feeling of wholeness.

Class is taught by Cassie Hammarmeister, LMT/RYT

Time:
7-9:30PM
Location:

City:
Providence
State:

Summary:

Please join us at Brown University, 85 Waterman Ave. Room 130, Providence, RI 02906, 2/28/18 from 7-9:30pm for an eating disorders panel comprised of experts and students. We will address the questions below, as well as ones from the audience, and will provide an opportunity to text anonymous questions for the discussion at the end of the panel.

For any questions, please contact Heather Hower: [email protected], 401-374-7320.

Eating Disorders Panel Questions:

1. Introduction of each panelist (background/share story.)
2. What do you consider the definition of an eating disorder? What does it mean to you, and at what point does a concern with food and body image transition into an eating disorder?
3. What should people do if they have a friend who they think is struggling with an eating disorder? For the students, how would you have wanted to be approached? Did your eating disorder affect your relationship with your friends?
4. What is the effect of Brown/Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) culture on eating disorders? Specifically for the students, how do you manage at Brown? Was your eating disorder something that started at Brown, and if not, how did different environments play a role in your experience before Brown?
5. How do you recommend pursuing help? Is receiving a diagnosis helpful? Are there any self-care or alternative treatments that can be effective without seeking professional help?
6. Many students are concerned that if they come forward with an eating disorder they will be watched and monitored by the University, and therefore are resistant to seeking treatment through resources such as Health Services or Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). What is your opinion on this?
7. For the professionals, why did you decide to get into a field that deals with eating disorders? What does treatment usually look like?

"Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image" Film Screening + Panel

Date:
Thursday, March 1, 2018
Time:
6:30pm
Location:
Cambridge Public Library - Central Square Branch, 45 Pearl St
City:
Cambridge
State:
MA
Summary:

Join Project HEAL for the Boston screening of the exciting new documentary Straight/Curve which examines the industries and obstacles responsible for this body image crisis and showcases the dynamic leaders fighting for more diversity of size, race and age. Following the film, Project HEAL will host a live panel with local advocates and professionals to discuss Health At Every Size, weight stigma, diet culture, and body acceptance.

The screening will be held in the Lewis Room at Cambridge Public Library, Central Square Branch. A $10 donation is suggested and very much appreciated! Donations support Project HEAL's treatment assistance program.

About Project HEAL's 2018 Eating Disorder Week Campaign and Partnership with Straight/Curve:
Healthy people come in all shapes and sizes, and weight is only one of many indicators for health (Bacon & Aphramor, 2011). Despite this, and the reality that the average American woman is a size 16, weight discrimination has increased steadily in the last decade, and occurs more frequently than gender or age discrimination (Andreyeva, Puhl, Brownell, 2008). A 2015 study from Self Magazine found that 84% of women are unhappy with their bodies, and 57% think about this “constantly.” This leaves them vulnerable to a dangerous yo-yo dieting cycle, and the resulting self-blame for the inevitable “failure” is often a core contributor to binge eating (Bacon & Aphramor, 2011). To make matters worse, the majority of people with eating disorders are not underweight, making them less likely to seek and receive treatment for their eating disorder (Bacon & Aphramor, 2011). Changing this pattern is fundamental to eating disorder recovery and self worth.

We have partnered with the film Straight/Curve to screen their feature documentary across our 42 chapters nationally on March 1st. We will host panel discussions in NYC and LA with prominent influencers including Emme, Susan Moses, Brian Beitler, Katie Wilcox, Jennie Runk, and Amanda Crew. We will also launch a social media campaign, #MyHealthyBodyCan highlighting diverse, strong, and healthy women of all shapes and sizes engaging in activities they love, such as yoga, running, dancing and surfing. We will interview these women about their relationships with their bodies, how they came to accept and embrace themselves, and how this acceptance has allowed them to live their values more fully. We will interview leading academics, including Jen Gaudiani, MD, on why weight is a bad proxy for health, and why encouraging body acceptance across all shapes and sizes promotes better health outcomes.

All of Me Screening with Panel Discussion and Q&A

Date:
Friday, March 2, 2018
Time:
7-9PM
Location:
Reflections Eating Disorders Treatment Center 31 Stiles Rd Suite 1500
City:
Salem
State:
NH
Summary:

Parkland Medical Center’s Reflections℠ Eating Disorders Treatment Center and Kingdom County Productions are proud to feature a free screening of the documentary film All of Me by award winning filmmaker Bess O’Brien. The Kingdom County Productions film will be featured during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Friday March 2, 2018 from 7-9pm at the Reflections℠ Eating Disorders Treatment Center, located at 31 Stiles Road in Salem, NH. A panel discussion and Q&A featuring filmmaker Bess O’Brien with individuals featured in the film and New Hampshire natives in recovery will follow the screening.

All of Me focuses on the lives of women, girls and boys who are caught in the downward spiral of eating disorders and their struggle to regain a sense of self-compassion and healing. The film also focuses on the parents who struggle with their children around this devastating disease.

Although the film focuses primarily on Bulimia and Anorexia, the underlying issues of other eating disorders are touched upon in the film. In addition, All of Me delves deep into the often pervasive ways that food, dieting, and body image affect all of us on a daily basis. Many of us may not be diagnosed with an official eating disorder but struggle with our own histories and insecurities around food and weight.

Most importantly All of Me centers on what are the underlying emotional issues that eating disorders stem from including depression, anxiety, trauma, sensitivity, control, perfectionism, and other mental health issues. In addition, the movie gives hope to those struggling – people can recover and reclaim their bodies, their connection with themselves and others.

Staff from the Reflections℠ Eating Disorders Treatment Center will also be available to answer questions and provide tours of the facility.

There are approximately 42,000 New Hampshire residents struggling with some form of an eating disorder right now. Reflections is proud to provide the state with expert, compassionate eating disorders treatment at both the partial hospital and intensive outpatient levels of care.

There is no cost to attend and anyone is welcome to attend. Come join the panel in a thought provoking discussion and get your questions answered!

Location:
Starr Foundation Hall The New School for Social Research 63 Fifth Avenue
City:

Summary:

The Women's Therapy Centre Institute of NYC presents its annual Indwelling. This year, Susie Orbach, co-founder of the WTCI, is honored on the 40 year anniversary of her ground-breaking book, Fat is a Feminist Issue. Her transformative ideas still astound and as they have evolved are urgently needed today. Susie's social activism continues to excavate and dislodge the interlocking structures that interfere with a person's ability to be embodied, and to live without fear and anxiety about food and feeding oneself. In this historical and political moment her voice of resistance will help us be hopeful with an expansive vision of mental/body health.
The event includes performances by Caroline Rothstein, Helena Rampersaud, Jessa Callan and Realize Your Beauty. The event ends with a Speakout, a time honored traditional forum for people to find their individual voices and share experiences, allowing the personal story of each to be heard, dignified, and transformed by our coming together. Indwelling is followed by a reception.
