Conflict Zone is an acclaimed one-woman show about recovery from an Eating Disorder and PTSD that takes the audience on a ride through laughter and tears. With a compelling story-line centering the (often underrepresented) perspective of a young woman from a conflict-ridden-area, the play presents the battle with an ED in a unique way—not falling into common, over-simplified stereotypes. Conflict Zone brings to life the journey of ED-recovery in a creative and relatable way, touching both those who have suffered from an eating disorder and those who know little about them. The show was written and informed by lived-experience and testimonials, combined with consultations with mental health professionals as well as research conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Chattanooga
State:
TN

Focus Treatment Centers has partnered with the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (UTC) to raise awareness about eating disorders on the UTC campus on Tuesday, February 23rd. This event will include eating disorder screenings and body positivity information.

The goal of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (#NEDAwareness) is to shine the spotlight on eating disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope, and putting lifesaving resources into the hands of those in need.

Eating disorders are biologically based mental illnesses that affect an estimated 30 million Americans of all ages, genders, socio-economic statuses, and ethnicities. If left untreated, eating disorders frequently result in costly medical complications and may result in death. Individuals who have access to and receive appropriate care often fully recovery and go on to lead productive lives. Yet the vast majority of individuals suffering from eating disorders do not receive the care they need. For this reason, eating disorder advocacy and education are crucial.

Confidential screenings are also available by appointment at Focus Treatment Centers by calling or texting 423-380-8007 or by emailing Ashley Fairbanks at [email protected]. More information available online about eating disorder treatment in Chattanooga.

Eating Disorders have historically been associated with heterosexual young white females with a particular body type, but in reality they affect people from all ethnicities, size/shape body types, ages, and even men. For some of us it feels like we are "hiding in plain sight" or overlooked because we are significantly less likely to be associated with or asked about eating disorder symptoms and behaviors by our loved ones and those in the medical field.

We invite you to join our discussion led by Amy Ferraro about how some of us with eating disorders are hiding in plain sight and how we can feel more accepted.

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUP: WE INVITE "EVERY BODY TO HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE"

Date:
Thursday, February 25, 2021
Time:
6pm
Location:
Virtual
City:
Chicago
State:
IL

Within the eating disorder field, marginalized populations continue to
face inequities in both access to care and inclusive care. This support
group will be facilitated by our Medical Director (Kim Dennis, MD), our
Director of Outpatient Services (Shale Marks, LCSW,CADC) and our
Director of Nutrition Therapy (Colleen Kestel, MBA, RDN, LDN). We
welcome conversations on raising awareness of implicit bias that negative
impacts patients with eating disorders. Structural racism within our field
disproportionately reduces access to full spectrum eating disorder care
for BIPOC patients. Systemic bias within the medical community also
perpetuates weight stigma, implicit thin bias (in professionals, patients,
families), stigma associated with co- occurring mental illness and
addiction (including food addiction), and the specific needs of LGBTQIA+
patients seeking eating disorder care. These are a few of the identified
areas needing change to create a medical system rooted in equitable,
accessible and expert Eating disorder care for all.

Join Shaping Perspectives… A Woman’s Way to Joy at https://facebook.com/shapingperspectives Saturday Feb 27 from 9am-112Noon for the Ditch Your Diet Book, Plan, App Challenge.

Dieting is a precursor to eating disorders. According to the National Eating Disorders Association. “35% of “normal dieters” progress to pathological dieting, and up to 25% of those individuals develop eating disorders”. Eating disorders affect everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, culture, size, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation. According to the Medical Daily “women spend an average of 17 years of their life dieting” and 80% of girls 10-year old girls have been on a diet, 50% of girls want thinner bodies and girls feel better about themselves when dieting (Common Sense Media). The Eating Disorder Coalition reports the rate of children under 12 admitted to a hospital for an eating disorder rose 119% in less than a decade.” And doctors are warning parents of a ‘tsunami” of childhood eating disorders due to the pandemic.

The Ditch Your Diet Book, Plan and App Challenge is designed as a first step towards overcoming dieting cultures hold or grip on us and society.

By ditching and ridding these ‘eating disorder precursor resources & tools’ from their homes and communities, individuals and families make room for thinking and acting in a different way when it comes to size, shape and weight.

In addition, this tangible action acknowledges one’s commitment to

Say no to diets
Reject society’s thin ideal
Accept & Honor one’ body
Know their true value and worth
Reducing fat shaming-bullying & weight stigmatization

The Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa (EDCI) is proud to host an awareness fundraiser with a focus on purposeful rest. We are turning the traditional “awareness walk” on its head with a team-based event we call Eating Disorder Awareness (Not a) Walk Fundraiser or #notawalk for short. We hope you join us in spreading our message of combating exercise shame with compassion during this year's Awareness Week!

Please check out our event page: https://givebutter.com/notawalk

To get started, we encourage you to donate to an existing team, join a team or start your own team. To simply donate, click the "Donate" button at the top of the screen. To join in on the fun, join a team or create your own team by hitting "Fundraise" button above. Then share this page (and our message) far and wide. Let your friends, family, co-workers, gym buddies, and your social circles know they can also participate.

The fundraiser will run through the end of of Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February 22nd - February 28th). February 28th will be our "event" day in which we encourage all team members to participate in a period of purposeful rest. Get in your cozy clothes, find a comfy spot, put your feet up, and give yourself permission to honor your body by giving it some well-deserved rest!

Be sure to take a picture or selfie of yourself resting and tag us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or email us at [email protected] to have your photos featured on our website!

Also, be sure to check out our website (www.edciowa.com) for additional information, resources and to learn more about the EDCI mission.
