Food Insecurity; Not Just a Social Justice Issue

Date:
Monday, February 24, 2020
Time:
4:30-6pm
Location:
10 N Market St., Asheville, North Carolina 28801
City:
Asheville
State:
NC

Join Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders during #NEDAwarenessWeek 2020 for a panel and discussion about the intersection of food insecurity and eating disorders with Traci Malone Nutrition, Bountiful Cities, BeLoved Asheville, and Bounty & Soul.

Food insecurity is defined as a “lack of access to enough food for and an active, healthy life.” Estimates include 1 in 8 Americans are food insecure or 40 million people, including 12+ million children. It is estimated that eating disorders impact 80 million people in the United States. Research has uncovered a link between frequent food deprivation and eating disorder behaviors. Because of the misinformation around the cause of eating disorders and who is at risk, many people who struggle with both food insecurity and eating disorders may be overlooked.

Please join this community discussion with area professionals! We will talk about food insecurity, how food insecurity and eating disorders intersect, what is being done to combat food insecurity in our community, and thoughts about how to provide a more just and equitable care to those with eating disorders and food insecurity.

No cost. Open to the community. RSVP required by Feb. 18th.

*Thursday, February 27, 2020
*11:15 am – Noon — Check-in, Sponsor Exhibitors, and Networking
*Noon – 4 pm — Body Talk: Using Storytelling & Metaphor to Understand & Treat Body Image Distress (4 CEs)
*This session is appropriate for clinicians and the general public
------------------------------------------------
About the workshop:
Once an esoteric psychological concept, body image is now a household word, in part due to the ever-expanding role of the mass media in promoting unreasonably thin bodies as the standard of beauty. In eating disorder recovery, body image issues are often the first to show up and the last to leave. More often than not, a weight loss diet is the precursor to an eating disorder, and sometimes long after disordered eating behaviors subside, the struggle with body image remains. This presentation shows how to use metaphoric language to shift the focus away from how we look to how we see, to recognize the deeper meaning beneath the struggle, and to find
freedom from body image distress. Please join us as and workshop sponsors Carolina House Eating Disorder Treatment Center, Tapestry, and Transcend ED as we welcome Dr. Anita Johnston to #WNC!

About Dr. Johnston:
Anita Johnston, Ph.D, CEDS, clinical psychologist and iaedp certified eating disorder specialist and supervisor, is the Clinical Director of Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorders Residential Treatment Programs in Maui and Honolulu and the Executive Director of Eating Disorder Programming for the Integrative Life Center in Nashville,Tennessee. She is the author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, which has been published in six languages, author of several professional articles and book chapters, and the co-creator of the Light of the Moon Café, an interactive e-course and online “workbook” for Eating in the Light of the Moon. A pioneer in the field, Dr. Johnston has been working with women’s issues and eating difficulties for over thirty-five years. She founded the Anorexia &Bulimia Center of Hawaii in 1982 and Ai Pono, the first free-standing eating disorders IOP in the country in 2001. She is currently Clinical Director of ‘Ai Pono Hawaii, which has an eating disorders residential treatment facility on the island of Maui and out-patient treatment programs in Honolulu and the Big Island of Hawaii. She provides individual consultations online and conducts workshops and professional training around the world, using metaphor and storytelling, along with her training as a clinical psychologist, to address the complex issues that underlie struggles with eating, weight, and body image.

Join us for Complimentary Restorative Yoga in Honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week
Friday, February 28th from 6:00PM-7:15PM at Nourish Your Mind – Middletown, NY

In support of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week which runs February 24 – March 1, we will be offering a complimentary restorative yoga class based on NEDA weeks theme, Come As You Are: Hindsight is 20/20. This offering is for anyone that has been touched by an eating disorder, including caregivers and family members.

The class will emphasize that regardless of your body shape, weight, race, gender identity, ability, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or your stage of body acceptance and eating disorder recovery, your story is valid and deserves to be heard. We will come together to honor your healing path of recovery and the struggles and successes that led to where you are today, through relaxation, meditation and compassion.

No yoga experience needed. Mats and props will be provided. An open heart and mind encouraged.
*The goal of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (#NEDAwareness) is to shine the spotlight on eating disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope, and putting lifesaving resources into the hands of those in need. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness and will affect 30 million Americans at some point in their lives, but myths and misinformation still keep people from getting the help they need. During NEDAwareness Week, communities across the country join the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to raise awareness through social media campaigns, legislative advocacy, building lightings, local events, and many more activities.

Lemond Nutrition is thrilled to be a part of NEDAwareness 2020.

If you've struggled with obsessing over the numbers on the scale, this event is for you. The truth is that our body weight is NOT our worth. Health and self-care is NOT a number. If that number is holding you back from thinking you are worthy, feeling loved, feeling healthy, then join us for our scale smash event. We have the right to pursue true health at every size, therefore, numbers should not be the center of our health journey. Release the power of the number by smashing that scale and starting true self-care AFRESH in 2020. Hindsight is 2020.

All participants will be entered into a raffle for our self-care gift basket. Check out our Lemond Nutrition Facebook page as we post more information regarding this upcoming event.

Participants will need to bring their own scale, hammer, and protective eye wear.

For more information, please contact our office at: 972-422-9180.
