Calling all Creatives -

Love Your Vessel International and OCA Mocha are very excited to collaborate to bring this “Embodying Empowerment” Exhibition to life that celebrates our bodies! The goal of this exhibition is to promote body acceptance, self-love, spread eating disorder awareness, and work to dismantle unrealistic beauty standards. This call for artists launches from February 11th until February 21st, taking place partially during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

Love Your Vessel International is an organization that utilizes the transformative power of the creative arts to promote empowerment, self-love, and body acceptance through yoga, art exhibitions, self-love photography, events, talks, workshops, and retreats. The core mission is to uplift individuals while combating unrealistic beauty standards and spreading awareness of eating disorders. Our bodies are works of art that breathe and move in the natural gallery that is the world. No one should be held back by society’s ever-shifting gaze of approval because at the end of the day - we exist as perfect beings as we are.

At OCA Mocha, all bodies are welcome and our next gallery is a tribute to that. Our community and artists are celebrating the greatness within each and everyone one of us. We’re proud to partner with Love Your Vessel to create a space to love and appreciate the beauty of the body.

This exhibition is open to all mediums and artists.

Curators: Martina Maya-Callen & Alexis Tyson

Utilizing the transformative power of art, Martina Maya-Callen works to celebrate bodies and dismantle the unrealistic beauty standards in society and started a global movement of acceptance. Love your vessel started as one eating disorder warrior's journey but has catapulted into an international social movement. This is an Eating Disorder Awareness Art Exhibition during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, February 21st-27th. This is the story of an eating disorder warrior's journey to self-acceptance and self-love. As a collaborator for the National Eating Disorder Association, resources to the NEDA helpline and screening tool are listed. The Hidden Opponent: 2022 NEDA Week Panels

Date:
Monday, February 21, 2022
Time:
8pm EST
Location:
Virtual
City:
N/A
State:
Other/International

The Hidden Opponent is a non-profit organization aimed at addressing the stigma of mental health in athletics. Our mission is to educate, advocate, and provide support when it comes to mental health issues, especially with the stereotypes and negative culture around mental health in sports.

For NEDA Week in 2022, we will be hosting two panels focused on eating disorder awareness and education, specifically for athletes. We will be addressing Fueling your Body after Sport & Having Healthy Conversations around Food on Monday, February 21 at 8pm EST and will feature Maggie Headlee (Maggie Bakes Grace), Katie Spada (Fueling Former Athletes), and Lauren Fischer (Balanced Nutrition, LLC). On Wednesday, February 23 at 8pm EST we will have Tasha Golding (Beyond Rules Recovery), Lily Feldman (Balanced Nutrition, LLC), and James Anastassiades (University of Hawaii Men's Volleyball Alumni) sitting on a panel about Intuitive Eating & Self-Care around Food.

In the culture of sports, topics like weight, food, and eating can place value on the individual's performance over the individual's physical and mental health. We hope to educate athletes to pick up on these dangerous stereotypes and to pursue healthy ways (both physically and mentally) to celebrate themselves and their bodies for what they are able to achieve.

Public Health Club and BC2M @ Staten Island Academy will be organizing a day at our school to wear blue or green, grab a treat, and wear a positive affirmation. This event entails advocating by wearing a color, including ribbons which will be given out; becoming more aware by reading infographics posted around campus; and stopping by a station to use a body marker and write on yourself a positive affirmation you will carry around for the whole day. If you are in doubt regarding what to write — don’t worry, we have index cards. Eating disorders affect people of all backgrounds and genders. This week, a nationally recognized awareness campaign, strives to bring awareness to eating disorders which have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Covid-19 has only increased these statistics and let us make it part of all of our missions this week to spread awareness and make sure that those who are currently struggling know they are not alone.
