National Eating Disorders Association, Binge Eating Disorders Association Merge to Unite Eating Disorders Field
NEW YORK CITY — October 26, 2018 — The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), the nation’s two leading eating disorder support organizations, have merged to unify the eating disorders community and improve access to services and support across the entire spectrum of these illnesses. The merged organization will operate under the name NEDA. Claire Mysko will continue in her role as NEDA’s Chief Executive Officer. Chevese Turner, BEDA’s founder, has assumed the role of NEDA’s Chief Policy and Strategy Officer. Susan Vibbert, who served on BEDA’s Executive Committee, has joined NEDA’s Board of Directors.
“This merger is an exciting step towards realizing NEDA’s strategic vision of reaching all people affected by eating disorders,” Mysko said.
“Eating disorders affect people of all sizes, races, genders, sexual identities, socioeconomic status, abilities, and diagnoses. We are thrilled to join forces to confront harmful stereotypes and send a message that we are stronger together. Everyone is welcome in our newly combined community,” added Turner.
BEDA began serving the Binge Eating Disorder community in 2008 and was a critical support system to this previously underserved and under-recognized group. Binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States and affects three times the number of those with anorexia and bulimia combined.
NEDA, the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders, is a support system and resource for the 20 million women and 10 million men who suffer from eating disorders at some point in their life. NEDA is dedicated to raising awareness, building communities of support and recovery, funding research and putting life-saving resources into the hands of those in need.
