I don't want to not eat but everything tastes disgusting?

Hey people I'm a transgender female, and also a recovering bulimic. Last time I purged was around 5 years ago and I'm really proud that I haven't since. But I've been having this serious issue where I can't eat because the food that I try to eat tastes really really bad to me and if I try to force it I vomit. I've been consuming a lot of liquids for this whole week, because I literally just can't eat food. And I don't understand why because I'm not feeling guilty about it or anything else. Does anybody have any ideas as to what's causing this? I'm just so confused and lost right now.

I'm supposed to get a new G.P

I'm supposed to get a new G.P. soon. I don't even know how to feel and it's not a question of enjoying food. I want to eat! But my brain won't let me or something.

Hey StardustSparkle... i know

Hey StardustSparkle... i know this thread was created years ago so I’m hoping this reaches you. I’m a 21 year old female with what sounds like a really similar story to you but it’s happening to me now. I had anorexia, bullimia and a bad obsession with laxatives and over exercising (all by force) from about 13-16 and for the past few years haven’t had (too much) urge to control my eating to stay “thin” (what I used to want to be).
I’m now finding that over the past 6 months or so my appetite has decreased slowly but surely and I’m struggling to eat even small meals.
When I did eat that small meal I could enjoy it.. until about a month ago. Now the idea of food makes me nauseous and even my favourite foods taste disgusting.
I was just wondering what the outcome of your situation was? Did you find a solution? Hope you’re well now. Mariah xxx

StardustSparkle,

I've never experienced your specific problem, but it's very possibly psychosomatic: that is to say, your mind is so resistant to eating an adequate amount of food (or certain types of food) that you actually feel queazy when you try to eat. Do you have a therapist? An ED therapist might have other patients experiencing this and might be able to offer some insight into how to overcome the physical symptoms psychologically.

Best of luck!

Hi StardustSparkle,

Congratulations on your recovery! That's so great. What you're going through sounds very frustrating, though! I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with food right now.

Like Cosmia said, what you're experiencing might be psychosomatic and related to your ED. Talking to a professional who specializes in EDs is probably a good next step because they might have seen this kind of thing before. You could also talk about it with your new GP once you're able to make an appointment. I would be sure to mention your medical history with EDs so that the doctor will know that could be related, but they could also see if it's related to another kind of health problem. Are you taking any new medications? I know medications can sometimes cause side effects like nausea and can affect your sense of taste.

Sorry we aren't able to offer more specific advice! We aren't medical professionals here on the forums, but hopefully you'll be able to talk to someone who is a professional about this soon. Also, sorry for the delayed responses. A lot of us on the forums don't post every day. But keep checking back and keep posting! We're here to support you! :) Good luck, StardustSparkle!

Can’t eat

I see these posts are years old but I am going through something similar. Hence the reason I found this forum. I am hoping maybe you get direct emails when someone posts and will be able to let me know if any of you found a resolution. My situation is a little different in that I am an overeater. Also I have diabetes, diabetic neuropathy and a few other issues so I take several medications. Bottom line though is that my symptoms are the same as yours. I cannot makemyself eat. Especially protein and processed foods. It all tastes like preservatives so bad that I can’t taste anything else. I get nauseous thinking about trying to eat a meal but so hungry and frustrated that I can eat just enough bites to take away the starving aspect. Then like you have said I am basically living on snack items. It’s been going on for a couple of years now and it cyclic. There are times I can eat again, and my ability to eat comes back ragingly. I don’t believe it’s related to medication as I am not taking anything new since the problem started. Hope you are all better and hope someone out there might have answers. Thank you.
