National Walks Manager
Position Summary:

The Development department is looking to increase community engagement through walk attendance and sponsorship for its National Walks program. The Walks program generates funding for NEDA’s programs and services such as the National Helpline, Navigator program, NEDAWareness Week, and much more.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • With guidance and mentoring from the National Walks Manager, assist in researching:
    • Different walk sites
    • Local organizations near a walk location to be contacted
    • Outreach opportunities and contacts for the walks
  • With oversight from the National Walk Manager, learn how to create a template for tracking information pertaining to different walk sites.
  • Participate in weekly development meetings to increase knowledge and understanding of fundraising for a non-profit organization.
  • Learn about the different kinds of donations and sponsorships associated with the walks and with oversight from the National Walk Manager, learn how to identify key players in these arenas.
  • With oversight and training from the development team, learn how to draft sample communications to targeted sponsors.
  • Opportunity to shadow NEDA staff in organizing an annual walk.


  • With oversight from the National Walk Manager, learn how to maintain the database of outreach opportunities and contacts.
  • Learn how to utilize research and solicit in-kind donors and sponsors for walks.
  • Opportunity to learn from NEDA staff how the walks program brings communities together and generate funding for NEDA’s programs and services.
  • Share ideas for growth and future development planning.

Training/Support Provided:

Volunteers will be trained at NEDA by the National Walk Manager. Training includes general knowledge about eating disorders, the programs and services NEDA offers, and the importance of getting communities involved in raising funds and awareness about eating disorders. Volunteers should expect to strengthen their current knowledge and talent when getting involved with NEDA.


Volunteers will have the opportunity to shadow and be closely supervised by staff members. It is anticipated that the volunteer will have a greater understanding of raising awareness about mental health in a non-profit setting from a development standpoint. The volunteer will be able to attend weekly meeting to learn more about how development planning is structured and carried out.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Strong computer skills, data entry and word-processing ability.
  • Must be dependable and self-motivated.
  • Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Recovery is important to us here at NEDA. We require that applicants with personal experience who are interested in getting involved with the National Eating Disorders Association have two years of strong recovery due to the intense and triggering nature of this position.
