Halloween can be a difficult time of the year for those who are struggling or who have struggled with an eating disorder. The overwhelming presence of candy and attention-grabbing costumes can often make the night feel as though it’s fueled more by tricks than treats. It can be especially difficult since it is so ingrained in our culture and thus, difficult to avoid.

Here are some of the ways our NEDA community plans on fighting these obstacles and promoting body-confidence this Halloween:

“Not making myself feel bad for enjoying the day and rocking my costume!”

“By dressing up as Rosie the Riveter!”

“By wearing whatever costume I feel most comfortable in and encouraging everyone I know to do the same.”

“I will enjoy candy with my children at the end of their trick-or-treating adventures.”

“By wearing what I want to wear and what feels comfortable.”

“When people make comments body shaming people in more revealing costumes, stepping in and saying something.”

“By slowing down and being present. This helps me be in my body and feel what she wants and needs.”

“I’ll be wearing what I’ll be most happy in with the added bonus of a couple tiny ED symbols drawn on my body.”

“By celebrating the fact I have the mental and physical strength to bring my little brother trick or treating for the first time in too many years!”

“I will promote body positivity this year by being proud of myself and by not commenting other people’s weight!”

“By reminding myself to stress less over Halloween. I will remind others the same.”

“Fighting against body shaming costumes and ads.”

“I will not compare myself to other women. I will not envy other women’s curves or bodies. I will love myself for who I am and how my body looks at this current time of my life.”
