hormonal changes/trigger

Hi there, I was just curious if anyone else gets triggered monthly with hormonal changes...? It seems that no matter how far I get with my recovery, I find myself being triggered to binge and purge as soon a there is any fluctuation involving my female hormones. I workout regularly, eat healthy nutritious food, quit smoking over a year ago, and have been sober now for 9 months, but regardless with all that is right, I just can't seem to shake this awful cycle. I made an appointment to discuss a possible hormonal imbalance with my doctor, but I would really like to avoid any type of medication they may suggest to stabilize this imbalance. Though I am finding myself at wits end with all of this. I feel a though I'm living in a fog, which causes stress and confusion in areas of my life that I generally take great joy in, causes stupid arguments in my relationship, and then without fail a binge is engaged full force. I still haven't discussed any of this with my boyfriend, but I'd like to. Fear is what is holding me back at this point. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I believe hormones do play a role!

Hi Truth731 -

Thanks for reaching out through this forum. I've found it to be incredibly helpful and supportive; I hope you do too!

I found this link I thought you might find helpful and informative. I hope it provides a foundation of information that might benefit you in your upcoming discussion with your doctor. I'm glad you've made an appointment with your doctor to explore your thoughts and concerns surrounding hormonal changes/triggers.

Are you currently involved in a support group? I believe you would find this to be a great, on-going, valuable source of support. I can relate to the fog an ED can create, as well as just the overall stress it brings into your life. I found the support group and trained ED counselor helped significantly in creating more clarity and joy in my life. You are on the right track, and I applaud you. Keep up the great work towards claiming the healthy and loving relationship you so deserve!

You might want to consider talking with the NEDA Helpline too, as just another point of valuable insight. They are trained specifically on all ED's, and are incredibly compassionate, supportive and confidential. Their number is #1.800.931.2237. They're available M-F/9:00am - 5:00pm EST.

You can do this!

Hugs and blessings!

Hormonal Imbalance

Hi Truth731,

I'm so glad you reached out, and also believe you should look into attending a support group and/or calling the NEDA helpline. They will definitely be a big help and be able to provide you with all the right information. In the meantime, I found an article online that talks about the hormonal imbalances that can result in eating disorders:
