Group therapy already??

I've been working with my counselor and nutritionist for two months. I've dealt with my eating disorder for over 7 years and my counselor already wants me to attend a group therapy session. I told her that the idea of group therapy was terrifying. I struggle to open up with my counselor in my sessions I cannot even imagine a room full of strangers. I feel like she will be mad or disappointed in me if I don't go though. Part of me doesn't want to go to my sessions this week because I know she will bring it up. Has anyone else had this feeling before?

Group therapy

Hi pbwhite,

I completely understand that you might be really scared of sharing what you are going through with strangers. It might be that your counselor and nutritionist think that you are ready to go ahead and share your story with others. They might believe that this is a small step above sharing with them what you are going through. You should always do what you're most comfortable with and what your team suggests for you! ED recovery is always challenging, and I wish you the best! Please share with us what you decide to do. We support you!

Hey pbwhite!

Hey pbwhite!

I had a similar situation with my counselor, so I know how you feel. I didn't want to talk to him face to face so we did sessions online via chat for a very long time before I could face him, and he was very compassionate and understanding about it. I don't think your counselor will be disappointed or angry with you if you don't think you're ready. A professional like that recognizes how you feel and why, and they care about your well being, so they will support you either way. Don't be afraid to tell her how you feel!
