Bulimia Bloat

I am currently in treatment for anorexia/bulimia and it's been roughly six weeks and my stomach is still so incredibly bloated. I would have thought that by now it would go down (even a little) but it's discouraging and hard to get past. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so how long did yours last?

Hi Corinne!!!!

Hi there!!!

Thank you so much for trusting these forums with your story and feelings! I hope that I can of some support to you!

I think your concern is common and I certainly remember having it when I was in treatment. Although everyone's body takes different amounts of time to heal and return to a normal state, I do want to make sure you now that it is temporary!! I know that it may seem like six weeks is a long time, but please be patient with your body, keep on the track to recovery, and your body will return to a healthy state! I'm sorry that I don't remember how long it took my bloating to decrease, but I certainly think that it would be a good thing to bring up with your doctor. Have you been able to discuss this with your doctor?

Great job on seeking out help and starting the recovery process!!!! You are worthy and deserving of a life free from the eating disorder!!!

I know that there can be several things that come all at once when we start recovery. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Thanks again!! I hope you are doing well!!

Bulimia can cause constipation and plenty of problems with the stomach including gastroparesis (food stays in your stomach for longer than it should) Bulimia can also mess with the your digestion in other ways. It usually sorts itself out eventually. If you are worried, I would speak to your doctor. (source,
