Being comfortable with alcohol

I am wondering if anyone has made progress with going out drinking with friends and recovery. I hate how my nervousness about alcohol/weight gain keeps me from socializing and enjoying myself. If anyone has some advice or thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them. :)

College life

Hi tallgirl,

I am currently in college and have been dealing with similar issues. It is extremely difficult to go out with friends that enjoy drinking because I get so anxious at the idea of drinking alcohol and gaining weight. But one thing that has helped is that having a couple drinks in one night is not going to make you huge that day or the next. The only people that really gain weight from alcohol is if they are drinking a lot of it allllll the time. If you have a couple every once in a while with friends, it's not going to do anything! I agree with Birdie though, maybe you can try doing something else as well so the evening is not focused on just sitting and drinking a ton all evening, but maybe like bowling and having a few drinks, or a movie, or some drinks before dinner! Something like that! I realize that this is much easier said than done, but I wish you luck and health!
