10 year old son just diagnosed

Just like many parents on this forum, my husband and I feel overwhelmed with our young son's condition. We went to one ED expert so far and he immediately recommended admitting him to their treatment center. My son was starving himself for about 3 months and now he is binging uncontrollably. He has gained all the weight back plus some, of course he feels terrible and he has crying episodes every night. He also talks about how he hates life and wishes he was dead. He hasn't tried any self harm but I fear it's coming. I am so uncomfortable with idea of him being away from the family. The doctor also said there are no boys there, only teenage girls. I worry that he will feel so alone, especially given his low self esteem. I feel so torn as to what to do next....

Hi Setmar,

I am sorry to hear about your son. I am really glad to hear that he is getting medical help and has parents that are involved and commited to his recovery. He is really lucky to have you in his corner.

ED is really hard on entire families and it is only natural that you’re feeling overwhelmed. Please remember to take care of yourself. NEDA has some great resourses to help you get the support that you need. Navigators are volunteers that have been on the journey to recovery that your family is just starting and can provide insight and support. The link below has that and some other ideas for building a support network.

I wish you the best and hope you continue posting.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having such a rough time of it. Its good that your son is receiving the help that he needs. It also seems to me that he's got a good support network in you and your husband - that, as I understand it, is also very important in the recovery of those with EDs.
Recovery takes time as you probably already know. It'll take patience on everybody's part. NEDA has some nice literature that I find soothing to take a look at sometimes. Check them out if you like:
And if you haven't already taken a look at it:

Best of luck. And do keep us updated.
Also, just in case: Self-Harm Prevention line at 1-800-334-4357

I also have a son pre dx who we fear is anorexic.
I have just registered and am trying to learn the system
All the best to you

Hi Momwith13yroldson,

Welcome to the forums, I’m really glad that you decided to post. I’m sorry to hear about your son, I hope that he is getting the help he needs to recover. He is really lucky to have you by his side; support is such a crucial part of recovery.

NEDA is a great resource to help you learn about ED and treatment. And these forums are full of awesome people that want to support each other.

I like this info packet; it has a little bit of everything.

NEDA also has a helpline so if you need help finding resources give them a call Monday-Thursday from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm @ 1-800-931-2237.

I wish you and your son the best; I hope to see you posting soon.
