Thank you for considering a volunteer or internship experience with the National Eating Disorders Association. We offer a variety of opportunities from one-time only, seasonal projects to on-going commitments. Internship opportunities for college students are offered at our national headquarters in New York. Our goal is to design a volunteer or internship experience that meets your needs and the needs of the agency by following these three guidelines:

1. Work towards our vision of eliminating eating disorders and body dissatisfaction.
2. Nurture the development and education of volunteers/interns.
3. Contribute to the overall well-being of thsoe we serve by our collaboration.

Available Opportunities:

There are two ways to join the Helpline. Both opportunities are located in New York City.

Helpline Volunteer/Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Must be available weekdays, 9am-5 pm.
Position Length: Commitment minimum after training is 6 months at 3 hours/week for Volunteers; 3 months at 8 hours/week followed by 3 months at 3 hours/week for Interns.
Availability: 10 Openings
Summary:
Helpline Volunteer/Interns offer information and referrals to callers and answer baisic questions regarding body image and eating disorders in a caring and compassionate manner. The Helpline Volunteer/Intern may also assist with other duties in the National Eating Disoders Association's office as needed (i.e. Writing letters, assissting with formal information distribution, gathering new resources, etc.). This position is a great learning opportunity and involves over 10 hours of training.

Helpline Research and Resource Development Volunteer/Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Must be available weekdays, 9am-5 pm.
Position Length: Commitment minimum of 3months.
Availability: 60 openings total
Summary:
 The Helpline Research and Resource Development Volunteer/Intern researches and gathers information to help support the Helpline. This position does not require any direct contact with Helpline callers, but often allows the volunteer to be present in the NEDA Helpline.

Proud2Bme Volunteer Moderator

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Must be available evenings or weekends.
Position Length: Commitment minimum after training is 6 months at 3 hours/week.
Availability: 5 openings total
Summary:
 Proud2Bme is a new online community where teens can connect with peers online for support in healthy behaviors, self-esteem and positive body image. The moderators will help to keep the site a safe, positive environment for teens. Volutneers must be available to come in to the NEDA headquarters in Times Square for trainings, but, afterwards, will volunteer from home. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in online communities and help steer teens toward positive support and information. It's also a great way to stay current on trends in the media and among adolescents. Volunteers must be available one night per week to monitor the site for at least 3 hours and check-in with the program supervisor. Interest and knowledge about eating disorders and strong communication skills are desirable.

Administrative Volunteer

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Availability Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
Position Length: As needed
Position Description: Assist with general office support as needed, such as mailings and assembling packets for membership. Quick and accurate data entry skills. Answer phones. Projects as assigned by various staff.

Marketing Volunteer/Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Must be available weekdays, usually between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm.
Position Length: Minimum 3 hours/week for volunteers and 10 hours/week for interns. Commitment length variable.
Summary: Contribute to NEDA's mission of expanding public understanding and prevention of eating disorders and providing support to individuals and families by assissting in our ongoign marketing campaign. Marketing interns increase their knowledge and understanding of eating disorders, as well as the marketing techniques and strategies of a not-for-profit organization.

Development/Fundraising Volunteer/Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Must be available weekdays, usually between the hours of 10am-4pm.
Position Length: Minimum 3 hours/week for volunteers and 10 hours/week for interns. Commitment length variable.
Summary: Contribute to the association's mission of eliminating eating disorders and body dissatisfaction! Assist staff in recording donations and donor acknowledgement, as well as researching corporate and foundation prospects. Tasks may include data entry, mailing thank you letters, internet research, cleaning up donor records, mailing projects and organizing files. Assist with conference and special event planning. If you have strong computer, writing, graphic design or other skills not mentioned here, we may also have other projects that fit your skills and interests.

NEDAwareness Week Volunteer/Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: 3-8 hours/week; must be available weekdays 8:30am-4:30pm.
Position Length: Minimum 10 weeks
Summary: Be a part of the program team dedicated to spreading awareness of eating disorders and supporting those affected by them. Join the team and lend support leading up to, as well as during, NEDA's largest outreach effort, NEDAwareness Week. As a NEDAwareness Week Volunteer/Intern, you will help the cause by performing vital customer service and marketing duties surrounding this massive outreach effort. Your supprt will be an essential part of a very important program at NEDA.

Program Volunteer/Interns

Programs Research Intern

Location: NEDA Headquarters, New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: 3-8 hours/week; must have availability weekdays 9:00am -5:00pm.
Position Length: Minimum 10 weeks
Summary:  Contribute to NEDA's mission of expanding public understanding and prevention of eating disorders through collecting, synthesizing and summarizing research related to a variety of topics on eating disorders.  The programs intern will increase their knowledge and understanding of eating disorders as well as their ability to communicate about these issues.  This internship would be an outstanding opportunity for graduate students interested in eating disodrders treatment and research, and would result in finished articles authored by the intern and approved by NEDA's clinical and scientific advisory council.

Special Events Volunteer

Location: Throughout the United States
Days/Hours Needed: Varies depending on event
Position Length: Commitment depends on the event and can range from 1 day to 2-4 weeks.
Summary: The National Eating Disorders Association hosts or is associated with many events throughout the country for which we need volunteers. Please contact us for further information by email at wwalters@myneda.org. Please include the city, state or region in which you are available and we will contact you when an event comes to town.

Social Media Marketing Intern

Location: New York, NY
Days/Hours Needed: Flexible, but prefer a candidate who can intern at least 10 hours per week.
Position Length: Negotiable. Minimum of 6 weeks.
Summary: The National Eating Disorders Association is increasing its presence on social media. The intern would help NEDA to identify online groups to follow/engage with, develop creative ways to use social media to increase awareness and education of eating disorders, and imporve the overall social media reach of the organization and the Proud2Bme website. For the right candidate, there is an opportunity to write some content for the NEDA and/or Proud2Bme websites.

Graphic Design Intern

Location: New York, NY (must be able to come into New York office as needed, but can work remotely for most hours)
Days/Hours Needed: Flexible, but requre a candidate who can itern at least 5 hours per week.
Position Length: Negotiable. Minimum of 6 weeks.
Summary: The National Eating Disorders Association is looking for a creative individual with experience in graphic design and an eye for typography and layout. You will work on generating images for the NEDA and Proud2Bme websites, as well as creating print materials (posters, post cards, handouts, etc.). Intern would ideally be someone looking to gain a lot of work experience, improve their portfolio, and be interested in providing valued input on NEDA's marketing materials.

Annual Conference Volunteer

Location: St. Petersburg, Florida
Days/Hours Needed: October 11-13, 2012
Position Length: 3 days
Summary: The National Eating Disorders Association hosts an annual conference that brings up top experts in the field of eating disorders together with treatment providers and individuals, families and friends impacted by eating disorders. This year it will be held October 11-13, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club. Volunteers will be needed from Thursday, October 11 through Saturday, October 13 to support the production of this important event. Who is eligible?
High school and college students (undergraduate and graduate) 18 years old and above.
How much does it cost? Student Volunteers attend the conference for a reduced cost of $300.00.
What do Student Volunteers do? You will be assigned a limited number of tasks. Outside of those select tasks, you are free to engage in the conference as you please.
