How Your Gifts Help

Is there anybody out there?

“Robert” called from Colorado seeking support for his eating disorder. He was hesitant at first because he wasn’t sure if men could have eating disorders. We explained that in fact men do and that we get a lot of calls from men at our helpline.  Having established that it was possible, Robert was relieved and shifted immediately to talking about how needed to find support in his area. He lives in a rural area and has tried for months to find help, but has been unable to locate anything in his area. His case is complicated by the fact that he has no transportation, no job and no insurance of any kind. After talking with him about crisis lines and community information lines for low cost or free support and making sure he was aware of the possibility of Medicaid through Dept of Social Services, we found support groups that met online and by phone that Robert could attend from home. Robert was immensely grateful and thanked us. Robert called us 8 months later. His application for Medicaid had finally been accepted and he had been able to find a residential program that accepted him. He had been in recovery now for many months. Because of his improved health he had been able to get a job at a local hardware store. He was celebrating his second paycheck when he called. He wanted to let us know that he wanted to become a member of NEDA and make a small donation to thank us.
