ECT ( Electro Convulsive Therapy ) Treatment

I've suffered from an Eating Disorder, Anorexia being my primary since the age of 17 and i'm now 22. I'm currently struggling with it and going to be going in patient for treatment at some type of facility soon but desperately need medical stabilization first before I even begin any type of teatment, but of course keep avoiding it due to the ED voice in my head. I also suffer from a lot of psychological illnesses such as severe depression, anxiety, ocd, and bi polar. For years now I have wanted ECT teatment because even when my Eating Disorder habits are not acting up I can never seem to be happy and am always struggling immensely with my depression and other symptoms although my mom was always against it up until now. I have been on several different medications which most never work and if they do they will only work up until a certain point then i'll build up a tolerance for them and i'm back to square one of it not working anymore. My mom was always against the idea up until now. I am starting to begin doing thorough research on it as I know it's a huge decision and life altering one at that and isn't something to be taken lightly. Basically, my question to you all is.. Has anyone on here with any Eating Disorder ever received the ECT treatment? if so, what was the outcome for you?

Thank you.

Dear Paigebrittany,
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Dear Paigebrittany,

I'm so proud you've reached out to this incredibly supportive forum. That's an important step towards claiming your life free of an ED. You should be very proud!!

As far as ECT treatment, I'm not familiar with this. Have you asked your therapist about this treatment? I would suggest you reach out to the NEDA Helpline #1.800.931.2237 and ask one of their trained representatives if they know anything about this treatment.

Please keep us posted and know that we're here for you and will be cheering you on in your recovery. You CAN do this!

Healing Hugs,
Legacy of Love

Thank you Legacy of Love for responding back. I haven't brought it up to my therapist yet but am going to be shortly. And thanks for the recommendation for NEDA helpline i'm definitely going to inquire about it to them and will give the feedback on here :)

I had OCD for a while too, not the humorous diagnosis kind but an actual match-up with the symptoms and my actions. I've read in some places there may be a link between the two, but research is ongoing. I "got over" the OCD and substituted it for an eating disorder, so now I'm thinking I have Obsessive Compulsive Personality, which can describe most of my behaviors. As far as your ECT advice, I don't know much about it, but isn't it true you lose some memories? Also, are you still suffering from OCD?
Thanks,
dlcuret

I myself don't know all the extensive research that has been conducted on the ECT treatment. I am having a packet from a facility that is highly renowned for doing the treatment sent to me. I am going to research it more thoroughly but right now my mind can't even comprehend anything so I have to leave that on hold until I get back from my treatment. But from what I have read in the past, a POSSIBLE side effect is some memory loss but it's not guaranteed. To answer your other question, Yes I am suffering from my OCD still very much so. I've had symptoms of OCD behaviors ever since I was five years old.. just wasn't actually diagnosed with it until middle school.

Hi Paigebrittany. I am Sally. I have had my Anorexia for over ten years and also suffer from severe chronic depression like u. I have had ECT several times throughout the time i have struggled with these disorders. For me, it has been life saving! It helps with the depression and hopelessness. I felt a huge difference in motivation for recovery and willingness. It gave me new hope that I could not only survive but thrive and be healthy. I did mine as an outpatient but either way is finee as long as u have someone to help u after the session. My heart goes out to u. if u have any questions or want further communication just contact me. I would like to help u in any way I can! Take care and keep hope alive! things can get better!Much gratitjude for sharing your story ; )
